For those that I know they are based all at most on SLC6/RHEL6 so, still MySQL 
5.1.

However several of us developers are using daily on their development machines 
exactly the above configuration without any noticeable issue.

You are well remembering the problem with locking but it has been fixed :-)

So I would say you can confidently use such configuration on production.
