Hi!

Reading this thread only now... Interesting findings. I confirm I can
see the problem with Python-2.6 but not with Python-2.7. Hence the
first option:

Given that many major Linux _server_ distributions are still on 2.6 (one
might argue "for a reason"), it would be better to solve the issues for
2.6 instead of moving up the requirements, IMHO.

I admit that for a productive server I don't really like to compile any
of the requirements myself as it involves tracking all sec and bug
issues for all those packages in detail by hand and with the compiler as
well. To avoid this is surely one of the main reason to run a server
distribution and not Debian unstable.

Personally, I even do not like base requirements beyond what Debian
_stable_ delivers. This is not my personal preference for Debian
speaking, but more the observation that one can assume that almost any
other decent Linux server distribution will meet these as well. This
eases up adoption of a product by new users a lot, ie.

Would you start compiling n libs and stuff that come at to low a version
with your distribution packages to just check out if a certain product
does what you want and is to your liking or wouldn't you just check
those products first that are only an aptitue install away?
