I think you should probably start out here:

You'll need some background idea of how invenio works to sort out all
the docs and get some knowledge about the terminology used.
You'll notice here that for the submission workflow you'll have to check
out WebSubmit (in case you think about web based submission) and
WebAccess for the rights management. You should also watch out for the
collection concepts used in invenio (Marc 980).
