Hum, it is by default in debian apache conf that if you type /home, it will
negociate the content, and return home.fr.html if you have configured your
browser to return french content, and notice. The point I missed is the fact
that www.debian.org use /index as index page, that why going to index is ok,
and that all links miss the extension, unlike at gnu.org

That's the way to go and it would be good to write an article that explains
that - also it should be helpful to provide a way to check if translation are
not outdated.

I change the item as a task: adding a faq entry that simply exists how this
could be used at home.gna.org

I also made index as valid index on the home.gna.org apache server (basically,
using index and internal links without .html)

« I mean that if you type, eg, http://www.gnu.org/home , you get the localized
page. »

I cannot test, gnu.org/nongnu.org is not reachable. Anyway, the way to go is to
have something similar to http://www.debian.org where you'll get the
index.fr.html if you ask for index.html with a browser looking for fr_FR
content.

At gnu.org, if I ask for a page.html, it will not print me the page.fr.html but
the english one.

Normally it should be done with the usual content negociation module, I just
have to check how exactly
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/content-negotiation.html

I was not clear sorry.

I mean that if you type, eg, www.gnu.org/home , you get the localized page.

I also tried at nongnu: www.nongnu.org/dink/freedink gets you to
freedink.fr.html, or to freedink.html. This follows the webpage naming policy
at www.gnu.org.

It should also be possible to create a page named freedink.html.fr that will be
displayed when you type www.nongnu.org/dink/freedink.html.

(I deleted the CC, your message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] cannot be delivered. This

"It is related to Savane: projects currently cannot provide a localisation for
their short/long description, mailing-lists descriptions, etc. "

Well, this is unrelated to ".ja.html" story reported by the user, but more
generally related to the task #115

It is a matter of design, as it means being able to i18nize the content of the
database. Stéphane already brought the point to the development list in the
past.

It is not exactly hard to find a solution, but it is hard to find a good
solution, that does not results in making an awful mess in the db, that does
not results in having almost all projects that got outdated translation.

This is not exactly a trivial issue, neither it is a bug but a part of the i18n
task that still remains to be finished. But the priority of i18n is clearly
getting first the interface translated.

" As for Apache configuration, I replied in the bug item at savannah.gnu.org
that it is already possible to use content negociation by omiting the '.html'
part in URLs."

Hum ? If you put a file called index.fr or index.fr.html or index.html.fr at
nongnu.org, it will be returned as default by apache? I'm surprised as at
gnu.org (same server) I never get to a french translation when I pick the
default index. But given the server access policy of FSF USA machines, there is
no way for me to retrieve that information.

Anyway, that's a good thing I'd like to provide at Gna!

> If it correctly understood the request,

> it is not related to savane

It is related to Savane: projects currently cannot provide a localisation for
their short/long description, mailing-lists descriptions, etc.

As for Apache configuration, I replied in the bug item at savannah.gnu.org that
it is already possible to use content negociation by omiting the '.html' part
in URLs.

William C. Richards, you mentioned that you are "working on the same stuff with
my projects web site and software". Maybe you could give us as example the
related part of your apache configuration?

If it correctly understood the request, it is not related to savane but to
apache configuration of the homepage server. He requests that index.ja.html get
returned as index to japanese users by default by apache.

So I reassign this item to the admin project.
