I really think projects need to be manually tested to see of they are
still active, maybe all of us project owners could slowly go though the
projects and categorize them and submit that to David Boswell.
I also think that projects that have never been touched should be
deleted. When I say never been touched I mean they are in the default
set up and none of the files have been changed. They just make finding
projects that are useful harder to find. I would put a list together of
such projects if wanted.

Note that there are well over 1000 projects hosted on the site. Because of
this it seems to me that we need to have some way to
categorize projects instead of just having one enormous list.
We have a project categories section that is manually updated, but this
is out of date precisely because it is manually updated. One solution
to this is to have a community effort to update the category listings
to make sure they are current.
There may also be smarter ways to automate a process of classifying
projects, but I still think there is value in trying to do this. If a
large percentage of projects are either inactive or were never started,
the signal to noise ratio would be very high with an unfiltered list.

David,
The automatic move of project to the abandoned list based on CVS
commits has caused a lot of consternation; this isn't the first (nor
the last) time this discussion has come up.
I propose abandoning the abandoned project list altogether. Instead:
1. Change the link name from "Active Projects" to "MozDev Projects"
(so as to avoid confusion with "Extenal Projects"
2. Rename http://www.mozdev.org/projects/active.html to
http://www.mozdev.org/projects/mozdev.html or similar (i.e., get rid
of all references to the words active/inactive/abandoned both in text
and in links)
2. There's already a "Last Update" field on the projects page
(http://www.mozdev.org/projects/active.html). If this isn't already
populated from the last CVS commit, then change it so that is the
date used in that field.
Thoughts?

Jim,
If you just make a change to one of the files in your www directory
then your project should get moved back to the active projects list. The
lists are cached, so you'll need to wait 24 hours to see the
change. If this doesn't happen, please let me know.
Automatically determining what constitutes an active vs. inactive
project is difficult, so we would welcome input from the group. We
are
also looking into creating a new category of unstarted projects that
will help seperate older projects with real content from older
projects
that were never touched after they were created.
David
I was just looking at the abandoned project list and to my surprise
I
found kiosk.mozdev.org on that list! I can assure you that I do
maintain that project and it has not been abandoned. Is there a way to
get
off
that list?
Thanks
Jim
