JG Photo/Yudhi Prosecutors at the West Jakarta District Court on Wednesday formally indicted four people for their alleged role in the gang rape and murder of a woman on board a public minibus in August. Irwan Soleh, 22, Rohman Setiawan, 20, Muhammad Fahri, 19, and Apriyadi, 22, are accused of raping and murdering 21-year-old university student Livia Pavita Soelistio on Aug. 16. Lead prosecutor Didi Karyanto said that the murder was premeditated, adding that the four could face the death penalty if convicted. Rohman was the driver of an M24 angkot public minivan that Livia took on the day of the murder, while Irwan, Fahri and Apriyadi are friends of Rohman who posed as passengers. Before Livia got on the bus, Apriyadi suggested that they rob one of the passengers. “Let’s find a female passenger, lets take her belongings, if she fights back let’s kill her,” Didi quoted Apriyadi as saying. But despite taking all of Livia’s belongings, the defendants decided to rape the student. Livia was raped inside the angkot and Rohman played loud music so no one would hear her scream. As the victim struggled, the defendants killed her, the court was told. “The victim was strangled by a rubber rope,” the prosecutor said. Her body was dumped in a ditch in Tangerang and discovered several days later. Didi said that all four defendants had served time in prison for similar crimes before. Livia’s family observed Wednesday’s hearing. The victim’s cousin, A. Lung, screamed furiously at the defendants after the trial was adjourned. “The family only hope that justice will be served, especially considering this is not their first offense,” he said. Livia’s parents, Hermanto and Yuni Chandra, did not appear to be in the courtroom. Livia’s case, along with a spate of sexual assaults and robberies on board public transportation, has prompted tighter police scrutiny of angkot drivers. The Jakarta administration had banned the use of tinted windows on angkots, as well as requiring all drivers to have clear identity cards, uniforms and licenses. Concerns over safety on public transportation were renewed this month after a woman in Depok was raped in an angkot.
