Paus Bertemu dengan Fidel Castro

Paus sempat meng- gelar misa bersama umat Katolik Kuba.
Paus Benediktus XVI bertemu dengan pemimpin komunis legendaris Kuba, Fidel
Castro, di Ibu Kota Havana. Pertemuan itu mengulang sejarah tahun 1998, saat
Castro bertemu dengan Paus Yohanes Paulus II. “Saya dengan senang hati akan
menyambutYang Mulia Paus Benediktus XVI seperti yang saya lakukan terhadap
Yohanes Paulus II, seorang yang rendah hati dan menjunjung kasih sayang,“ tulis
Castro di situs pemerintah, Selasa lalu.
Tatap muka itu hanya berlangsung beberapa menit di tengah kunjungan Paus di
Kuba. Ia secara khusus meminta waktu bertemu kepada Menteri Luar Negeri Kuba,
Bruno Rodriguez.
“Saya mendengar dia menyenangkan,“ kata Castro kemarin.
Pertemuan itu diharapkan bisa membahas kemungkinan proses perubahan di Kuba.
Paus menyatakan gereja siap membantu. Meski mengharapkan perubahan, Paus tidak
menjadwalkan pertemuan dengan kelompok oposisi. Bahkan oposisi mengklaim
pemerintah telah menahan anggotanya sebelum kunjungan Paus.
Paus juga bertemu dengan Presiden Kuba Raul Castro di Istana Revolusi Kuba
selama tak kurang dari satu jam. Paus sempat menggelar misa bersama massa umat
Katolik di Havana.
Umat Katolik di Kuba mencapai 10 persen dari populasi. Paus berharap adanya
perbaikan kehidupan di Kuba dan kembalinya kebebasan. “Saya telah meminta
kepada bunda Allah masa depan negara Anda, maju membawa pembaruan dan harapan,“
ucapnya. Marino Murillo, Wakil Presiden Castro dan bertanggung jawab atas
liberalisasi, mengatakan pemerintah sedang memperbarui model ekonomi Kuba
dengan sistem sosialisme berkelanjutan.
Tapi dia menegaskan belum ada perbaikan sistem politik.
“Tidak akan ada reformasi politik di Kuba,” ujarnya.
Hubungan Vatikan dan Kuba memang sudah membaik. Raul Castro menerima mediasi
gereja tentang isuisu seperti tahanan politik dan pengakuan organisasi
berpengaruh di luar pemerintah komunis.

Raúl receives His Holiness
Benedict XVI
Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of Ministers and State
received, on the afternoon of Tuesday March 27, His Holiness Benedict XVI,
Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church and the Vatican City’s head of state,
who is making a pastoral visit to Cuba.
During the private meeting, His Holiness and the Cuban President discussed the
expanding and longstanding relations between Cuba and the Holy See.

Today Havana is the site of another Papal mass
Today hundreds of thousands of Cubans from the capital and neighboring
provinces are filling Havana’s José Martí Plaza de la Revolución to participate
in the second mass celebrated on Cuban soil by Pope Benedict XVI, as part of
his pastoral activities in the country.
The mass is being broadcast live by Cubavisión, Cubavisión Internacional, as
well as Radio Rebelde and Radio Habana Cuba beginning at 8:30 a.m.
As was the case during the mass held on Monday in Santiago de Cuba, believers
and non-believers will attend this encounter with His Holiness Benedict XVI to
offer him their affection and respect, as befits a cultured people.
The immense hospitality and discipline of Cuban men and women will contribute
to making this a memorable moment, as was Pope John Paul’s visit to Cuba 14
years ago.
This is the final activity scheduled for the apostolic visit to Cuba by the
Supreme Pontiff, who as the Vatican’s head of state, met with President Raúl
Castro Ruz.
The farewell which will be offered the Pope by residents of the capital city,
representing the Cuban people, will also be broadcast by national television
and radio.
