The protesters, comprising members of the People’s Movement (Gebrak) and the Indonesian Nationalist Students’ Movement (GMNI), demanded the government cancel the planned increases as they would rob poor people of their money. Gebrak chairman Uba Ingan Segalingging said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono should learn from Chavez by adopting policies that favored the impoverished. Increasing fuel prices, he said, was an act by the President against the poor. “The policy to nationalize companies in Venezuela should be emulated by SBY,” he added. “We miss having in the Indonesian President a figure like Hugo Chavez who does not accept being dictated to by other countries, including the United States.” The protesters staged their rally by marching through Batam’s administrative center accompanied by a performance by a number of demonstrators pulling motorcycles along on ropes to depict people’s difficulty in getting subsidized gasoline. The rally passed off peacefully with police officers merely observing the protesters from a distance. The Batam City Hall was cordoned off using barbed wire to prevent protesters from approaching.
