Penderita penyakit mata ini potensial buta karena operasi yang direkomendasikan dokter banyak tak dilaksanakan dengan alasan biaya operasi mahal. Ahli penyakit mata Rumah Sakit Akademik Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Prof. dr.Suhardjo menyatakan biaya operasi katarak di rumah sakit di Yogyakarta Rp 7 juta. "Ini cukup mahal," kata dia, Minggu (15/4). Semakin mahal biaya operasi akan makin sedikit yang dioperasi, menurut ketua Ikatan Dokter Mata Indonesia Provinsi Yogyakarta, ini akan menambah jumlah penderita katarak. Penderita katarak diperkirakan 1 persen dari jumlah penduduk. Kenaikan jumlah penderita per tahun 0,1 persen. Lonjakan penderita katarak empat kali lipat diperkirakan terjadi 2025 sejalan naiknya angka harapan hidup. Karena itu pemerintah menargetkan penurangan 0,5 jumlah penderita katarak pada 2020. Di sela-sela operasi katarak gratis, dia menyatakan ikatan dokter mata mewajibkan setiap anggota mengoperasi (gratis) dua penderita katarak per minggu pada 2000 dan 10 penderita katarak per minggu mulai 2010. "Saya saja (sebagai profesor, red) tak sampai mengoperasi 10 pasien katarak per minggu. Maknanya, angka operasi katarak rendah, maka terjadi penumpukan. Mungkin karena kemiskinan (para penderita). Maka harus ada kegiatan sosial, dan katarak harus operasi," ujarnya. Menurut dia operasi katarak di tanah air kalah banyak dibanding Banglades misalnya. Karena itu operasi gratis katarak harusa digalakkan. Operasi massal ini kualitasnya tak lebih jelek dari operasai berbayar seperti menggunakan laser, tanpa jahit. Dokter ahli spesialis anak Prof. Partini menyatakan angka katarak bawaan makin banyak menimpa bayi. Dia merekomendasikan pasien agar anaknya dioperasi katarak pada usia 4-6 bulan jika anak tumbuh sehat karena potensi berhasil tak buta sangat tinggi. Bupati Sleman Sri Purnomo menayatakan usia harapan hidup tertinggi di Indonesia ada di Sleman, rata-rata usia hidup 75,6 tahun atau lebih tinggi dari raya-rata harapan hidup tingkat Provinsi DI Yogyakarta 74 tahun. Harapan hidup yang panjang potensi mendatangkan masalah kesehatan tinggi. Karena itu pemerintah daerah menggalakkan program usia tua yang sehat di antaranya operasi katarak gratis kerjasama dengan RS Akademik UGM.
