Indonesia inked a $114 million deal to purchase 37 Russian-made amphibious tanks, a Defense Ministry official said on Friday. The "BMP-3F Series 2" light-weight tanks have been specifically designed to operate at sea for, at most, a seven hour stretch. The tanks were made by Russian manufacturer JSC Kurganmashzavod and were sold to Indonesia by Russia's state-owned defens exporter JSC Rosoboronexport. "These tanks will enhance our technological capabilities," said Maj. Gen. Ediwan Prabowo. "We hope the procurement of these tanks will meet the Indonesian Navy's needs." The new tanks are scheduled to arrive in July next year. The tanks were purchased with funds included in the 2011 state budget, Ediwan said.
