KUWAIT: Police have arrested a drug trafficker who was using carpets
to smuggle 1,000 kg of heroin in an operation where the profits would
have gone to terrorism, the Interior Ministry said yesterday. The
amount of heroin, which was hidden in tiny plastic tubes woven into
the carpets, is the "largest quantity seized in the Middle East
recently," said Hawally Criminal Investigation Director General Col
Sheikh Ahmad Al-Khalifa Al-Sabah in the ministry statement. He said
the haul was valued at "millions of (Kuwaiti) dinars."
Detectives had followed leads from secret sources for 45 days, the
statement said. A Pakistani national, Mir Ahmed Lali, 23, was
arrested Saturday as he went to take delivery of the carpets at the
cargo terminal of Kuwait International Airport. Sheikh Ahmad said the
smugglers were two students who used an innovative way to bring in
drugs. Police did not say where the shipment came from, but a
security source told AFP the consignment was flown in from Pakistan
and seized at Kuwait airport late Saturday.
The statement quoted Sheikh Ahmad as saying the profits from the
smuggling operation would have been used to "finance terrorist
movements." The statement did not elaborate. "It looks like the plan
was to use Kuwait as a station to smuggle drugs to other countries in
the Gulf," he said, without identifying the states. The authorities
have contacted concerned parties in these neighbouring states, Sheikh
Ahmad said, adding such methods might be used again in future
smuggling operations. Kuwaiti courts sentence drug smugglers to
death. First Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Sheikh Nawaf Al-
Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah lauded the role played by the Hawally
Governorate Criminal Investigation Department in massive drug
seizure. During a meeting with Sheikh Ahmad, the minister, according
to a press release, said "this is a great accomplishment by Hawally's
criminal investigators" that continues playing a great part in
serving citizens by battling narcotics. Sheikh Nawaf praised the
cooperation and coordination between the criminal department and
Kuwait's Public Department of Customs. The meeting was attended by
the ministry's acting Undersecretary Lieutenant-General Ahmad Al-
