In the short surah 97 (al-qadr), especially in verse 1 "Lo, we
have let it come down in the Night of Destiny", Islamic tradition
sees an allusion to the coming down of the Koran. Therefore
Muslims use to hold vigils in the so called "Night of Destiny"
("laylatu l-qadr") sometimes to the end of Ramadan. They don't
however agree on the exact date of this "Night of Destiny". A
strong tradition understands it to be the 21st of Ramadan.
This is rather striking, especially if one allows for the fact
that the calendar of the Arabs was a sun calendar, which Islam
only later changed into a moon calendar. So you may duly guess
that this lenten month of Ramadan originally was December and the
21st was the day of the winter solstitice and considered to be the
birth day of Jesus.
This idea is corroborated by the great 13th century dictionary of
the Arabic language "lisân al-`arab", which under the entry
"at-timam" or "at-tamam", resp., quotes the explanation by the
famous Arab philologist al-Asma`i (ca. 740-828 AD):
"at-timam signifies the longest night of the winter. This night is
so lang, that all stars are to be seen in it. It is also the night
of the birth of Jesu above our Prophets and above him blessings
and salutation and the Christians hold it in high esteem and use
to sit up in it (i.e. hold vigils in it)."
This religio-historic connection is corrobarated further by a
correct understanding of surah 96, the language of which always
has been viewed upon as mysterious.
