Eko said from the first S$300,000 received on May 7, he only received S$170,000, of which S$28,000 was given to his spiritual adviser. Habib Abdurahman is my spiritual advisor. I gave him S$28,000 because I was worried for my safety and asked [him] to pray for me, said Eko, who testified against three defendants Diah Soemedi, Effendy Komala and Teddy Muliawan at the Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court on Tuesday. Eko didnt explain why he should have felt threatened or whether his fears were linked to the bribery case. Eko said he used S$6,000 of the money to pay his credit card bills and S$7,000 to buy household items. In addition, Eko told the court he had disbursed cash to several people who were close to officials in the Jakarta High Court, but he didnt disclose the amounts. In the indictment, prosecutors said Diah Soemedi, Effendy Komala and Teddy Muliawan bribed Eko and Dian so that they could stop the investigation into a tax evasion case allegedly committed by Master Steel. Prosecutors said that aside from the S$600,000 bribery, Eko also asked the company to pay an addtional Rp 40 billion ($3.7 million) to be disbursed to high court officials to send incomplete dossiers to the prosecutors office. By sending files with papers missing, prosecutors would have had to send back the documents for the high court to complete them, said prosecutor Ahmad Burhanudin, as he read out the indictment. With incomplete files the case could have been dropped, the prosecutor said. The defendants met Eko and Dian on April 25 in a restaurant at a five-star hotel to ask the two to help stop the investigation. In the meeting, the defendants asked Eko and Dian for help to stop the investigation and agreed to pay Rp 40 billion, assigning Effendy to arrange how the money was to be paid, said Ahmad. Ahmad said the defendants told Eko that they would submit Rp 10 billion at the end of April as a down payment. Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators had confiscated more than Rp 3 billion in cash from the apartments of Eko and Dian. It was also reported that KPK investigators seized $75,000 and Rp 700 million from two other apartments owned by Dian. The KPK caught Eko and Dian along with the two Master Steel executives, Teddy and Effendy, at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport last week. The first payment of the S$300,000 bribe was allegedly given to help Master Steel pay a smaller amount of tax than it was obligated, which caused the state to incur losses. After 24 hours of questioning, investigators detained the companys managers, according to Tito Hananta Kusuma, a lawyer for the two suspects. The KPK has also detained Eko at Cipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta and Dian at the Guntur military detention facility in Manggarai, South Jakarta. The head of East Jakarta tax office, Haryo Damar, had called his subordinates bad boys.
