http://www.antara.co.id/en/seenws/?id=21682 Indonesian Army to build smoke early detection system South Sumatra (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Army, in cooperation with provincial administrations, will build a smoke early detection system to cope with smog created by forest fires. Short, medium and long-term measures are required to curb smoke from forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan as conflagration cannot be overcome only with extinguishers, Army Chief of Staff Gen.Joko Santoso said at Sepucuk, Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatra on Saturday. The early detection system can be in the form of monitoring posts, especially in areas where hotspots are usually found, he said, adding that the early detection system must be built soon to anticipate the spread of smoke from forest fires every year. "To ensure quick handling and reaction and the earliest possible detection of hotspots, the early detection system must be built soon in cooperation of provincial administrations and local communities," he revealed. Besides building the early detection system, new breakthroughs must be made in the long run in the elimination of thick smog, for instance, by converting peat-land into productive farmland or plantations, according to Joko Santoso. Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regent Ishak Mekki said, meanwhile, that the local government will build monitoring posts soon, especially in areas where hotspots have frequently emerged. "We have so far striven to get rid of forest fires, but the conflagration has covered large areas, so with limited devices our attempt has been doomed to failure," Ishak said. He stated the intention to build monitoring posts in cooperation the Army and other partners. For the reclamation of peat-land into productive farmland and plantations, the OKI administration will invite investors. But we will oblige investors to provide fire extinguishers to anticipate the emergence of hotspots, the regent said. During the visit to South Sumatra, the Army chief of staff and entourage also inspected areas in OKI regency where many hotspots have been found. On the occasion he handed over water pumps and canned food to villagers.(*) Copyright © 2006 ANTARA October 14, 2006 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Post message: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe : [EMAIL PROTECTED] List owner : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage : http://proletar.8m.com/ Yahoo!
