Poverty and terrorism

There are many causes of terrorism but one of the prime causes for a person
becoming terrorist is being poor, meaning poverty leads to terrorism.

Reading the editorial in The Jakarta Post dated Oct. 12, titled Bali: May peace
prevail, it states: "A nationwide campaign against terrorism seems to be
bearing significant fruit." This is commendable and credit goes to various
security agencies, especially to the police forces under Gen. Sutanto.

In this context, as we all know that there is already a body known as
Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), I would like to suggest to President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono the formation of a KPK, called Poverty Eradication
Commission.

If I am not wrong, a similar body was formed during the presidency of
Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid, under the chairmanship of H.S. Dillon, but this
body was not able to do much work.

After Megawati Soekarnoputri took over the presidency from Gus Dur this body
was declared "defunct". Now two years has passed since Yudhoyono became
President, directly elected by the people. As the President he has made a lot
of progress in many fields, so it would be good if a new KPK was formed for the
eradication of poverty.

Poverty is like a tree that yields the fruit known as terrorism; it's a tree
that must be chopped down, meaning poverty must be totally eradicated.

It is said, "In a state where the ruler lives like a common man, the citizens
live like kings." At present we see the President live like a common man,
mingling with them, asking them their problems. President Yudhoyono is becoming
more popular with his brave actions, in bringing criminals to court and giving
them hard punishment where it means supremacy of the law exists.

Even Australian Prime Minister John Howard, speaking in the Australian
Parliament to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the Bali bombings, was all
praise for Indonesia's President, saying his commitment to fighting terrorism
is "undoubted and unconditional".

President Yudhoyono is trying hard to bring investors back to Indonesia and
create stability and security in the country. This will definitely lead to the
eradication of poverty by opening new job opportunities.

What people need now is affordable food, education, clothing, medicine and
housing. This will eradicate poverty and end terrorism in our country. Once and
for all Indonesia will be free from terrorists and terrorism.
