Police blame shooting on human error

The
National Police have dismissed allegations of standard procedural
violations in relation to the deaths of two officers in Merauke, Papua,
citing human error as the cause. Adj. Comr. Rony Pasaribu, a traffic police
officer, shot his colleague,
First Brig. Nur Hidayat, four times in a hotel room Tuesday, before
killing himself.
"We need to establish whether human or technical error was the cause of
this incident. In other words, whether it was an individual or
organizational mistake. "However, it is clear the deaths were not the result
of an
organizational mistake," National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Sisno
Adiwinoto told reporters Wednesday.
He said police would not conduct any further investigation into the incident
because those who were involved had died. "But we will collect information
about the incident to evaluate our
internal system," he said, adding that every officer required a weapon,
so the National Police would not release an order to confiscate guns
from its officers.
The motive for the shooting itself remains unclear.
According to the detik.com news portal, rumors have been circulating that
Rony and Hidayat might have been involved in a homosexual relationship.
However, Rony's family denies this rumor. His sister, Nelly Murlina,
said she was shocked to hear the allegations, telling reporters her
brother was planning to be married in 2008. Hidayat's relatives continue to
visit a funeral home in Bojenegoro, East Java, where his body is being kept.
Samian Sasongko, a relative, said Hidayat had been planning to marry in Merauke
