Egypt police break up Islamist prayer meeting (AFP)
13 October 2007 CAIRO - Egyptian police used tear gas on Saturday to break up what was said to be an unauthorised open-air prayer meeting of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, arresting 35 people after clashes in which 21 people were injured, a security official said. Several hundred Brotherhood sympathisers had gathered in Essalhia Al-Qadima, a village in the Nile Delta governorate of Sharquiya for the prayers to mark the start in Egypt of Eid al-Fitr, which follows the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Police intervened and dispersed the crowd, saying the meeting had not been authorised by the Waqf ministry, which supervises religious affairs and which determines what places apart from mosques can be used for prayer. Seven police and 14 supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood suffered minor injuries, the security official said. The Muslim Brotherhood is officially outlawed in Egypt, but holds more than a fifth of the seats in parliament through representatives who stood as independents. The government started a crackdown on the Brotherhood in December. It has especially been targeting the organisation's funding, freezing its assets and arresting prominent businessmen associated with it, as well as prominent leaders. --- End forwarded message --- Post message: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe : [EMAIL PROTECTED] List owner : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage : http://proletar.8m.com/ Yahoo!
