The police warden formerly in charge of high-profile graft suspect Gayus Tambunan said he received more than Rp 300 million (US$33,600) in bribes over four months from the former tax official. Comr. Iwan Siswanto, who was recently relieved as chief of the Mobile Brigade's detention center in Kelapa Dua, said he accepted the bribes in exchange for weekly "holidays" outside the detention center where Gayus has been held during his trial. Iwan's attorney, Berlin Pandiangan said the officer had imposed "weekly" and "monthly" fees on Gayus. "Between July and August, the weekly [fee] was Rp 5 million, while the monthly fee was Rp 50 million," Berlin said. Iwan asked for larger bribes of Rp 3.5 million a week Rp 100 million a month in September and October, Berlin added. According to Berlin, Iwan was in dire need of money to pay for medical care for his wife, who has had a tumor for 10 years. Iwan is undergoing questioning by the National Police.
