"I felt dirty and ashamed and sick," says Wayan, 18, a victim of sexual assaults he endured at the hands of a French pedophile in Singaraja, north Bali, starting when he was 11. The abuse continued for four years until Martial Juegler was jailed in 2007 for five years for child sex offences involving Wayan and another boy then under the age of 15. (Victims' names have been changed.) Then 63, Juegler's indiscretions were revealed only when he forgot to renew a visa and was hauled in to a police station where he unwisely boasted of sexual exploits. Juegler's alleged grooming method was typical: he had befriended Wayan while swimming at the beach. "He gave me a gold necklace . . . and he touched me," Wayan says. He went on to unofficially adopt Wayan as a foster son, professing his love but allegedly subjecting him to masturbation and oral sex. Wayan says he doesn't know if he was penetrated because he was routinely drugged. "I agreed [to be adopted] because he promised to do everything I want", pay for school costs, clothes, food and pocket money. Wayan's parents concurred on the fostering after reaching agreement on finances. "He paid for electricity and a loan, about one million [rupiah, $110] ," Wayan says. "He also took me away on trips around Bali." In a typical pattern depicting how foreign pedophiles embed themselves in poor, remote communities, Juegler bought a patch of land for R25 million in a village on the outskirts of Singaraja, opposite Wayan's family home. He built a small house in which he and Wayan lived. With Juegler now behind bars, the family sells food from a tiny warung (restaurant) attached to the house, in which Wayan still lives. "My parents think he was a nice, good man. He is very polite and he speak good Indonesian and Balinese." The abuse stunned the then 11-year-old: "I feel sick and I go to the toilet and cry. I was afraid to ask why he did this to me. I just stay silent. I was in shock. He ask what I want, if there was anything he can give me. I ask for a hand phone." Juegler subsequently insisted Wayan drink milk before bed at night. "When I wake up in the morning, I don't remember anything but I am naked. I feel shock and pain. I ask 'my father' [Juegler] why I'm naked. He just say 'no problem, it's OK'." Wayan's friends sometimes stayed at the house, sleeping together with Juegler. "Many kids in Singaraja have been abused by foreign men," he said. His younger brother Komang, then aged 6, " almost became a victim" of one but was found naked and screaming by their mother. Still, Wayan visits Juegler in jail monthly and buys him food and cigarettes with money sent by Juegler's parents in France: about $US200 every few months. "They [others] say Martial should pay me for the rest of his life. I feel sorry for him now . . . I still love him like a father." After one visit to psychiatrist Ni Luh Suryani, Wayan says his trauma has subsided, "but I try not to think about it". College study and a girlfriend help to blot out the past. IN the seaside town of Lovina, Made, a reedy, frail-looking 20-year-old, and his friend Nyoman, 30, tell Inquirer many of the pedophiles they serviced several years ago still frequent the area. Lured by the money, Made says he was exploited for seven years from the age of eight by a string of pedophiles, including several Australians, in Singaraja. They paid Made's older friend to find young boys. "My Bali friend say come to the hotel, man will give you money, food and drink." Italian Mario Mannara, convicted of pedophilia in Bali in 2001, paid Made R250,000 each time, considered a windfall. "He used me two times a week when I was 10. I liked to buy clothes and food. He had a lot of money." Mannara was convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse of children and sentenced to only 10 months' jail. He bought his freedom after four months. Made's friend Nyoman was abused by Mannara. Now being treated by psychiatrist Suryani, Nyoman is dependent on anti-depressants and has anal and back pain. Suryani says he is still severely affected. "I have big trauma. Before I am little bit crazy," Nyoman says. Despite the fact he is married, with a child, he says: "I wanted to abuse boys. Still now, I am looking at boys. I try to kill myself a few times, once with a razor blade." He tells of a large house in Singaraja where a foreign pedophile lives freely with nearly a dozen boys. Indeed, the Committee Against Sexual Abuse reports there are at least 20 pedophiles still in the regency, or administrative district. "There are also many old men who marry 15-year-old girls."
