"We have been watching for the past three months. Our friends there are still not getting any help, they are suffering," said Anis Hidayah, director of Migrant Care. Anis said that at least 200 Indonesian workers, because of various problems, were now reduced to living rough under a bridge in Jeddah, unable to return home. "The government is certainly not doing enough. It's been months and still there has been no significant progress," she said. Anis said Migrant Care estimated they'd need at least Rp 1.7 billion ($188,000)to bring the workers home. They hope to raise the money by asking for Rp 1,000 donations from the public. She was hopeful that the money could be raised within a week, as the movement has started to spread across Indonesia and even overseas. "Some friends from Makassar, Bandung, Kebumen and even from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan have confirmed that they will help by collecting donations," she said, adding that she hoped the fund-raising would become a national movement. Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Tene denied the government has been sitting idle, saying it had set up a shelter near the bridge. "But it has a limited capacity. It can only accommodate 100 people, so we prioritize women, children and sick people," he said. Michael said many of the workers could not obtain an exit permit from the Saudi authorities as they had contract or legal problems. "Many of our workers cannot obtain the permit because they have unresolved contract dispute with former employers, or had engaged in criminal acts," he said. Michael said the government has been repatriating some 20,000 migrant workers annually from Saudi Arabia. "It takes a lot of time and effort but we are not abandoning them, we'll do our best to make sure they go home safely."
