As Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali refused to board the plane to spirit him to Saudi Arabia, his wife Leila Trabelsi's words were reported as: ''Get on imbecile. All my life I've had to put up with your screw-ups.'' A senior air force official recounted the 74-year-old former president's feeble attempt to disobey Lady Macbeth of Carthage, as his wife has been dubbed, in Nouvel Observateur, a French weekly. As the so-called jasmine revolution rumbled in the capital, Mr Ben Ali, who was ousted after 23 years on January 14, stood on the tarmac in Tunis airport with a small briefcase, wringing his hands and saying: ''Leave me, I don't want to go. I want to die here for my country.'' Also there was Ali Seriati, Mr Ben Ali's hated political police chief, who pushed him on to the steps, shouting: ''For ----'s sake, get on!'' With Mr Ben Ali were his wife, a 53-year-old former hairdresser, their son Mohammed, 6, their daughter Halima, her fiance, their butler and two maids. Minutes after they took off, limousines arrived with Mr Ben Ali's inner circle - about 20 people, many of them members of the Trabelsi family - expecting to fly to France. Waiting soldiers arrested them all. Mr Ben Ali, his wife and a network of relatives are accused of building a financial empire that is now the subject of a multi-pronged international investigation. Ms Trabelsi was seen as particularly effective at enriching relatives with holdings. ''They bled the country systematically,'' says Nicolas Beau, co-author of The Regent of Carthage, a book about Ms Trabelsi.
