Renewal of Migrant Workers MoU only an Empty Promise
Thursday, 24 March, 2011 | 18:52 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Migrant Care public policy analyst, Wahyu Susilo,
said that the MoU with Malaysia on Indonesian migrant workers was only an empty
promise. He said that similar promises had been made in the past.

"In Malaysia, even though the Human Resources Minister agrees, the Home
Minister is often against it," said Wahyu, yesterday.

Previously, the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, Muhaimin Iskandar,
said that Indonesia and Malaysia will sign an MoU on domestics in May 2011 in
Jakarta. Indonesia stopped sending domestic migrant workers to Malaysia as of
June 25 2009.

But Wahyu said that there was a possibility that the agreement would not be
realized because both ministers have to agree on it. "It must be proved that
the plan is not just an empty promise," he said.
He said that points of the agreement are not in favor of the migrant workers'
welfare. He said that the minimum wage standard must be implemented. "There
must be a definite statement so the specific amount can be known." He said.

He hoped that the Indonesian government will implement the deal as soon as
possible so prospective workers can have some kind of certainty.
