Scores of seriously injured Libyans who have been brought to Doha to receive
medical care at the Hamad Medical Corporation have expressed their gratitude to
the Qatari government for the kind gesture.
Some of the patients, who spoke to mediapersons, described Libyan leader
Muammar Gaddafi as "a murderer and a merciless leader."
According to them, wanton loss of innocent lives and properties was currently
going on in Libya.
One of them, Mahmoud Fareq, an ambulance volunteer, said he was injured on
April 19 at Benghazi when his car was hit by a rocket.
His left arm was fractured due to the incident. He claimed the tensions lasted
four days and took the lives of some 100 people and seriously injured another
150.
Fareq was initially receiving treatment in Libya before he was moved to Qatar
because of the degree of his injuries.
Another victim, Fathi al-Nuais, who was a volunteer surgeon, said he suffered
serious injuries including fractured legs when government troops attacked him.
He came to Qatar due to the overwhelming situation in major hospitals across
Benghazi.
"There are four major hospitals in Benghazi with each having a bed capacity of
1,200 and all of them are full at the moment," he said.
Al-Nuais' treatment in Qatar will end by May 12.
Ahmad Ali al-Mughiri, also an ambulance worker, was hit by rockets fired by
pro-Gaddafi soldiers at Gabra area of Libya when he was inside the ambulance.
He said that there were more deaths than what the government has been claiming
while maintaining that the situation in Libya has reached a catastrophic level.
"Government is hiding the facts about the situation, as in Tripoli alone, the
number of deaths so far is huge. Also, we found that the government is making
use of mercenaries to kill its own people," he said.
Mutawil Yunus, a maritime expert, said many seriously injured Libyans have been
evacuated from the country in a bid to receive treatments in Egypt, Turkey,
Greece and Tunisia because of the dire situation in the country.
While describing how he was injured, he said: "One member of the pro-Gaddafi
troops came into the hospital where I was also present pretending to be injured
and started shooting sporadically," he recalled.
He added that many Libyans are presently living in perpetual fear as there was
no security for life and property due to the lawlessness of the soldiers and
Gaddafi's dictatorship.
Another victim, Mohamed said he and three others got caught in a rocket attack
by Gaddafi's soldiers while working on his farm in Ras al-Nuf.
While Mohamed lost one of his legs due to the attack, the other three were
killed on the spot.
"Gaddafi's soldiers are using all kinds of weapons to attack innocent people
like us, they have killed too many people already," he said.
However, all the patients commended Qatari government for their support in
bringing them to Qatar for the treatment, and termed it as "superb healthcare
services."
