Reiterating an openly interventionist position, Ashton said, "Gaddafi must go and his regime must end," during the foreign policy discussion when several speakers additionally proposed more forceful measures against the Syrian government, according to ABC. While the Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli, Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli, warned that the NATO bombings on the Libyan capital are hitting civilian structures and asserted, "They can't kill all the people," in an effort to capture Muammar Al Gaddafi, reported ANSA. Martinelli said in statements released by AsiaNews that there is no reason to the NATO attacks and emphasized, "In the streets desperate mothers and children can be seen, abandoned, on their own." "NATO was created to defend the weak, to promote peace, not war," the bishop said, criticizing those who describe the military operations as intended to protect civilians. The Apostolic Vicar confirmed that at least four children were wounded when NATO forces bombed an area within the Libyan capital where a hospital was located.
