Havana. June 16, 2011 "Happiness" UN praises Cuba's work on behalf of children Fausto Triana, Special correspondent . GENEVA.-Cuba received recognition from the Committee on the Rights of the Child in a session which totally focused on the issue of childhood, during which the island was praised for its advances in various social spheres. The Cuban delegation, headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno, presented the report related to the fulfillment of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. As is generally the case with this exercise, part of the work of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, the 18 experts comprising the CRC raised many questions during an animated interactive debate. In a general context, the negative impact of the U.S. blockade on Cuba in terms of implementing certain programs on behalf of children and adolescents was acknowledged by the committee. These include a greater use of Internet, given that Cuba has been unable to increase its development on account of coercive measures which make it impossible to expand its broadband using U.S. companies or their associates. The experts, particular those from Ghana, Peru, Uganda and Spain, together with the CRC rapporteur and president, Swiss Jean Zermatten, commended Cuban progress in health, education, sport and culture. They also valued the positive contribution of Cuban doctors and educators not only to their own children, but to those in many countries where they are cooperating with the authorities in an admirable humanitarian context.
