Picture: AP Source: AP AUSTRALIAN ambassador Greg Moriarty says Indonesia has shown the "Arab Spring" countries that Islam and democracy are compatible, and demonstrated the wisdom of not marginalising groups on religious grounds. "Each country is unique, but Indonesia has shown the world democratic transitions can be made, that Islam and democracy are compatible, and that the yearning of people to have a say in how they are governed is universal," Mr Moriarty told The Weekend Australian. "Indonesians showed great wisdom in accepting in 1998 and 1999 that the democratic transition would be a long process. Islam-based parties showed wisdom in accepting the rules of the game." His comments come as the collapse of the Gaddafi regime, the Muslim Brotherhood's role in Syria's revolt and the denunciation of Egyptian presidential candidate Mohammad Salim Al-Awa as a Brotherhood "shadow candidate" fan Western anxieties about political openings for Islamic activists across the region. The Arab Spring developments have raised interest in whether Indonesia's emergence as the third-largest democracy can show how to reform movements elsewhere in the Muslim world. After heading the Jakarta embassy's political section from 1999 to 2002 during the transition from Suharto's authoritarian New Order, Mr Moriarty was ambassador to Iran from 2005 to 2008. There the shah's overthrow in 1979 produced the kind of hostile, cleric-led Islamic republic Western leaderships hope will not develop in the wake of the revolutions sweeping the Middle East and North Africa this year. At a seminar in Jakarta this week, influential figures in the Indonesian transition, including former Islamic State University rector Azyumardi Azra and retired military reformer Lieutenant General Agus Widjojo, told of interest in their experiences from colleagues in Cairo and Amman. They said that the Middle East's democratic shifts, if they happened, would take longer and be more painful than in Indonesia. But like the ambassador, they warned against trying to suppress or marginalise political Islamists. "If there is a lesson to be learnt, it's the importance of getting as wide as possible a buy-in to acceptance of the new rules," said Mr Moriarty. "The avoidance of marginalisation of groups on ethnic or religious grounds has been important in Indonesia. "Indonesia's democrats were not afraid to allow Islam-based political parties to participate fully in the new and open electoral competition. "The Islam-based parties in Indonesia accepted that the new rules were by and large fair." The US-based NGO Freedom House rates Indonesia, with Mali and Senegal, as the only "fully free" political systems among the 47 Muslim-majority countries.
