By LINDA SILAEN JAKARTA—Diversified holding company PT Bakrie & Brothers said Friday it is considering repaying or restructuring $597 million of debt arranged by Credit Suisse Group in the near future. The company, whose business interests include plantations, telecommunications, mining and property, said in a statement to the Indonesia Stock Exchange that Bakrie is in "continuous discussions" with related parties on the debt. The Bakrie family needs to repay about $1.3 billion before March 2012, which could prove challenging as financial markets have dried up in recent months. Analysts said the options available for repaying its debts could include selling its prized stake in thermal coal producer PT Bumi Resources. Bumi Resources is one of the world's largest thermal coal producers, and a partial stake sale would likely fetch a premium from coal-starved buyers in India and China, who have been scouring the world for assets to meet their growing demand for coal. The Bakries have previously sold stakes in some of their coal assets to the Tata Group, an Indian conglomerate with interests in steel and power, both of which need coal.
