"Printed Circuit Board Basics", by Michael Flatt, has some interesting info, although
it's very manufacturing-oriented. You might
also try loading some of the Protel example files, and look at the PCB layouts in
single-layer mode (Shift-S toggles this in SP6).
The Protel help files also have some good material, just not always easy to find. For
example, while editing a PCB document, see
Help | Help On | PCB Design Layers and also Power Planes.

I am a newbie in pcb layout and making. Plan to make multi-layer SMD board
for a project and am using protel.
Where would I find a information on different layers like mask layer,
machanical layer, interplane layer. I have an very unclear idea on what they
are and how they are being used. Is there some tutorial somewhere?
thanks
Andrew
