Of course - that makes complete sense!!! Is there a particular state of mind that I need to be in to edit things I can't see? > You need to go to the layer dialog (shortcut 'L') then deselect > layers that you don't want to edit. In fact, the layers that I don't want to edit are the ones that I can't see! But, thanks for the information. I think the 'select-all on layer' followed the 'deselect-outside area' is probably quicker for my purposes.
