Partly depends on the accuracy of the monitor. For something with lousy
focuse, there's not much that an increase pixel count will do to improve the
situation.
partly depends on the tolerance of the user to small workspace.

For me, 16x12 is about right, but 1280x1024 or even 1024x768 will do in a
pinch.
