Dear Madam/Sirs, We have learnt about Newmont Mining Corporation of Canada’s intention to participate in Gabriel Resources (TSX: GBU) Equity Offering by acquiring 2.5 million units of the Rosia Montana project (RMGC).
Alburnus Maior is an NGO based in Rosia Montana (see www.rosiamontana.org). It represents the interest of over 350 families from Rosia Montana and 100 families from Bucium. Local property owners objecting to the involuntary resettlement that RMGC's project entails founded this association in September 2000. Alburnus Maior opposes RMGC's 13 Mt/a opencast gold mining project on social, environmental, economic and patrimonial grounds. The campaign to save Rosia Montana has given rise to the largest social and environmental movement in modern-day Romania; comprising amongst others, the support of authorities and expert institutions. ‘Alburnus Maior’ attached the English version of an article that appeared one week ago in ‘Academia Catavencu’; an eminent Romanian weekly newspapers. It describes how Gabriel Resources has been conducting its business, this via a group of criminals. Unbelievable as this story may sound, ‘Academia Catavencu’s reputation in investigative articles is undoubted. For the sake of your reputation, you would better read attentively the attached article and investigate this matter. On another note, please visit www.rosiamontana.org and access a communiqué dated 31 January 2004 to read about the European Parliament's resolution on the Rosia Montana mine development. Please also visit the 'archaeology' section of www.rosiamontana.org to learn about the unique cultural patrimony at risk of destruction by Gabriel's Rosia Montana mine development. In the 'investor' section on www.rosiamontana.org you will find a fairly recent investor’s guide to GBU entitled 'Anticipating Surprise: Assessing Risk'. It amongst others highlights the most pertinent social, environmental and cultural risks associated to the Rosia Montana mine development. Newmont Mining Corporation has recently come under a storm of criticism; this in particular with regards to your disastrous environmental and social records. In reply you claim to be adhering to the best existent environmental guidelines as well as seeking a so-called ‘social license’. You might want to note that ‘local support for a mining project’ is not the same as ‘promises for jobs’. Importantly, Newmont Mining Corporation and Gabriel Resources have no ‘social license’ in Rosia Montana; this due to the fact that Rosia Montana’s largest property owners have officially declared their refusal to surrender their properties for the mine project. Tasteless linguistic mitigation attempts from your part that aim to fade this fact will only create more problems for you. Given the above we look forward to receiving an explanation regarding your activities in Rosia Montana, your involvement in GBU as well as your latest intention to purchase 2.5 million units. We would also like to know whether you will be investigating GBU with regards to the arguments raised in the attached article. We look forward to hearing from you and remain Yours sincerely, Let us be the change we want to see! Ramona __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
