**BUCHAREST** (AFP)--**Hungary** is opposed to the use of cyanide by a
Canadian company to extract gold from a mine in ****Romania****, the
Romanian minister of Environment said Tuesday.

** **

"I received last week ****Hungary****'s answer on the Rosia Montana gold
mine project. The Hungarians do not agree to the use of cyanide in the
extraction process", Laszlo Borbely said, quoted by the Romanian news agency
Agerpres.

** **

Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC), which is 80% held by Canadian firm
Gabriel Resources, wants to use cyanide to extract gold from an open-cast
mine in Rosia Montana, a picturesque Carpathian mountain village.

** **

Rosia **Montana**'s green hills are said to hold more than 300 metric tons
of gold, one of the biggest deposits in **Europe** and all the more
attractive now with gold prices at record highs.

** **

But the project has drawn criticism from environmentalists, archaeologists,
historians and international organizations.

** **

They claim the mine would threaten the environment because the use of
cyanide, destroy priceless Roman mining galleries and plead for Unesco
listing of the site.

** **

Neighboring **Hungary** was asked to give its opinion as requested in the **
**Espoo**** convention that forces governments to notify and consult each
other on all major projects under consideration that might have adverse
environmental impact across borders.

** **

In 2000, the rivers Tisza and Somes as well as the Danube were polluted in *
***Hungary**** after a cyanide spill in a Romanian gold mine exploited by a
joint Australian and Romanian firm.

** **

****Hungary****'s opposition to the use of cyanide won't block the
environmental impact assessment of the Rosia Montana project, the Romanian
environment minister said.

** **

However, a decision whether to grant an environmental permit isn't expected
before months, he said.
