Files" folder!

Correct.

Simply moving from the "Downloads" folder to the "Program Files" folder
the ProTeXt folder produced by the installation presumably wouldn't do
the trick; I assume--but don't know, because I'm computer
illiterate--that this would leave unhelpful things in the registry and path.

How can I uninstall?

While ProTeXt isn't a "program" itself, its not listed inside "Program Files". Therefore you'll have to uninstall the single components, i.e. MiKTeX and TeXMakerX.

Incidentally, the file I used for installation was the third of the
three on the Purdue mirror site. The first and third files are listed as
being the same size, but the third is called simple Protext.exe, whereas
the first one has some numbers added to that name, and I see nothing
that tells one how to choose between them.

They are both the same. Its normal to store a file a) under a name containing version-number and release-date and b) link the content to another easier name.
