The benefit is simply to avoid an extra word users will likely forget and then 
need to look up.  To most people this thing is "proton", and "-project" is an 
arbitrary extra; other components don't add "-project".  The artifactId gets 
reflected into package names and is therefore part of the user experience.

I appreciate what you're saying about all the change that's been going on, and 
about the collision with a previous iteration of things.  This is certainly not 
a high priority.
