... which according to the libgmp home page http://www.swox.com/gmp/ can 
often be a nightmare.

We only use one function from that library, namely a routine to convert
a number to base 30.   It occured to me that this is a reasonably
straightforward algorithm. So could we not implement our own, and then 
drop the dependence on libgmp ?

Or am I being naive?
