I know. A long time ago I looked at the SSHv2/sftp code and IIRC this
has the usual ftp client interface and uses a boiled down FTP
protocol.  But I may be wrong.

My point here is that rsync is just a tool like scp and you can't use
it intercatively like a ftp client.  An interactive tools has the 
advantage that you can leave the connection open and browse the remote
site.  The rsync protocol has all the features you need to make an
advanced FTP like system.
