Do you have any references for the protocol, beyond the ssh2 source

Sounds nice. Where can I find the protocol spec?

For lsh, I think the current plan is to try to get a 0.9 and 1 1.0 out
in the not too distant future, and then add more features. I think the
gateway mechanism should begiven a high priority, as it will make it
easier to add new functionality without messing with the lsh core.
