Most of the time I would agree with you, Matt, but recent events show Red Hat doesn't always provide the pre-compiled and tested binaries we need. Remember the "No kernel-2.4.18-4.i586.rpm" thread May 20-24? From April 30 when Valhalla was released until August 20 when kernel-2.4.18-10.i586.rpm was quietly posted to the updates directory, there was no tested binary kernel compiled with CONFIG_DRM=y for 586 UP users. For nearly four months Pentium users needing DRM and other support had no choice but to compile their own kernels. It has to work in production releases. --Doc Savage Fairview Heights, IL
