here it is:
 [root@gstpc gerry]# rpm -e -vvv xf86-corefonts
D: opening db environment /var/lib/rpm/Packages joinenv
D: opening db index /var/lib/rpm/Packages rdonly mode=0x0

then
[gerry@gstpc gerry]$ ls /var/lib/rpm/Packages
/var/lib/rpm/Packages
[gerry@gstpc gerry]$

I take it that means there is nothing in the database?
