Title: RE: 8.0 Problems - Any ideas?

It sounds like you built this computer yourself. I recently did that using the Asus P4T533 motherboard. If you built the machine yourself...are you absolutely sure that you connected the USB wires correctly? For USB2, I get the impression that Asus will give you a preassembled plug with all 8 USB wires arranged correctly. But for some ATX cases like the Antecs, the wiring provided for USB 1.1 ports is in the form of separate, very small wires and you have to connect them correctly to the USB 1.1 header on the motherboard. It's easy to get the wiring wrong.

Does your case speaker work when you turn the machine on? Can you hear a single beep following POST meaning "all is well" or a voice message meaning the same?

Have you downloaded a driver update from the Asus website for your motherboard?

Have you also checked the data sheets provided by Asus on their web site to identify the ethernet controller details?

Have you looked on the motherboard for the ethernet controller chip?

Thanks

OK - After a grueling hardware upgrade, I finally loaded 8.0. My new system is a 2.53 Ghz P4 with 1GB RAM. The motherboard is an ASUS P4S8X with lots of stuff, including on-board 6-channel sound, USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 and a lot more.

After making sure Plug & Play was disable in CMOS (the default by the way - why did I change that?!?), 8.0 installed with few complaints. Everything was recognized except for the following, which still does not work:

On-board Ethernet controller: It comes up as a SIS 900/7016CI, but according to the motherboard documentation, it's actually some sort of RealTek controller - unfortunately, it doesn't say *which* controller it is. Either way, all of the SIS or RealTek drivers fail to load properly. It's a strange message I have fallen back to an old 3Com Vortex card for the moment. Any ideas on this one would be appreciated.

Hardware browser crashes at startup. I am unable to use this program at all.
I also can't seem to find the usb port my Palm Pilot cradle is connected to. The default device is /dev/pilot, which doesn't exist. I have 6 USB ports on this system and the cradle is plugged into the 2nd port. The mouse is plugged into the 1st port and is working fine. I could really use some help with this. I was using a serial cradle before. My old Palm Vx finally died and I was able to trade up to a M515 cheap.

Other than that, everything seems to be working as designed. Help with the Palm and the RealTek Ethernet controller greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Chris Williams
