Title: RE: 8.0 Problems - Any ideas?
Yes, I did build the computer myself.

This particular ASUS board is very straight forward and I have verified the USB ports are correctly wired - it's a plug for the second set of ports. The first set is built into the motherboard itself and these are the ones I'm using for the mouse and cradle. The mouse works just fine.

The case speaker works perfectly. In fact, it works perfectly using the voice enabled messages in the BIOS. It's kind of weird hearing a female voice saying, "System completed power-on self test," instead of just a beep.

There are no updated Linux drivers available from the ASUS Website that I have found. It does appear my BIOS revision is up to date (1003). I also did finally find the spec for the Ethernet controller. It's a (pasted from Website) SiS® 963 integrated 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet with Realtek PHY... It's not documented in the box, but it's on the Website. RH 8.0 successfully recognized the Realtek 1394 controllers.

Tried usbview as suggested in another post. That program doesn't appear to be on my system. I'm checking CDs and rpmfind.net for it now. Any other ways to browse possible USB devices?

Cheers,

Chris Williams

It sounds like you built this computer yourself. I recently did that using the Asus P4T533 motherboard. If you built the machine yourself...are you absolutely sure that you connected the USB wires correctly? For USB2, I get the impression that Asus will give you a preassembled plug with all 8 USB wires arranged correctly. But for some ATX cases like the Antecs, the wiring provided for USB 1.1 ports is in the form of separate, very small wires and you have to connect them correctly to the USB 1.1 header on the motherboard. It's easy to get the wiring wrong.

Does your case speaker work when you turn the machine on? Can you hear a single beep following POST meaning "all is well" or a voice message meaning the same?

Have you downloaded a driver update from the Asus website for your motherboard?

Have you also checked the data sheets provided by Asus on their web site to identify the ethernet controller details?

Have you looked on the motherboard for the ethernet controller chip?

Thanks
