Hey Jon, At the outset, you must make sure that the preference for "Insertion Follows Scrub" is checked.
When you select using while using a combination of the scrub wheel and Shift key, the range within the session is selected and those range values are reflected in the Start, End and Length fields. If you engage the transport, you'll now hear your selection. Pro Tools will only play the selected range. You see, after you make a selection, there is no insertion point, per se. There's only a selected range. If you scrub within a track without using the Shift modifier, wherever you stop scrubbing will be the place where the insertion point will reside.
