Hi Scott, One thing to try is the command for scrolling the track into view. Sometimes VoiceOver reads things that are absolutely hidden from view to sighted users. In a way, this can be helpful but it sometimes works against you. Aside from that, it's been a long time since I used Lion so I can't offer anything other than what's been said.
