Some folks choose not to do the subscription model and it's separate from the 
copy protection which is the iLok part of the equation. In other words, the two 
are separate things. You need the iLok no matter what. The subscription model 
gets you tech support, any upgrades and a discounted price the following year 
for the annual support plan.
