Chris,

You have to split the audio into its own region. If you've already made the 
selection, capture the region with Command-r. It'll prompt you to name the 
clip. Once you've named it, use the nudge commands to move the clip. If your 
nudge value is set to a half a second, just hit the minus key to move the 
selected clip forward in the timeline. To move it later, use the plus key on 
the num pad. To change the nudge value, use Option-Command-plus or minus to 
cycle through the various denominations of values.

If you want to avoid having to name the region, per se, you can navigate to the 
start point, split the clip with Command-e, navigate to the end point and split 
with the same command and then select the clip. Either way, you'll end up with 
the same result.
