My understanding was that the Avid Core Audio driver was for using Avid hardware with third party software. The driver is not necessary for using Pro Tools itself. In fact, the Avid Core Audio driver can cause conflicts with the Native Instruments S series controllers. I faced that issue when I tried to get Komplete Kontrol talking.
