The other day I upgraded to 12.6 and scratched my head a bit over the whole
surrendering of licenses because of the new scheme of allowing third-party HD
interfaces to be used with Avid HDX cards. To be fair, I didn’t read any
upgrade instructions and didn’t prepare for the change. That said, everything
worked out fine. At least one other person on the list did experience an
inexplicable malfunction with third party licenses which, unfortunately because
it was over the weekend, couldn’t get any tech support. In the end, it seems
that the solution in this case was to use the Synchronize command in the iLok
License Manager to restore the licenses that weren’t working.

I recall having a problem quite some time ago where something wasn’t working
for me, and I can’t remember what it was but, it drove me nuts. I finally
called Avid tech support and they had me synchronize my iLok and the problem
was resolved. Frankly, it seemed like such a simple solution that I probably
should have remembered that remedy but I completely forgot about it until this
issue came up for someone else. Synchronizing is apparently this vague feature
that, when you need it, is great and it’s not exactly clear when you might need
it but, it seems that perhaps when surrendering licenses is involved, that
might be one of those times when things get a little touch and go.

So, before I forget, please add this to our collective memory: when licenses
are there and yet they don’t seem to be recognized by the software that
requires the license, hit the Synchronize button. Hopefully that’ll help
somebody if they run into similar trouble.

Cheers,
Slau
