In short, everything is possible with out a control surface but Control surface 
makes a lot of things much quicker and easier to do. If you don't have the 
funds right now don't worry too much about it, but I would definitely say you 
should Buy one as soon as you can since it really helps a lot. Also look at the 
Presonus Faderport 8, apparently it's a great surface and it's also a lot 
cheaper than the Avid stuff.
