Hi Nate,
I've had great experiences with both Western Digital and seagate drives. In 
every case, they were either seventy-two hundred or ten thousand rpm drives for 
the HDD models. I've used the same brands for the SSD drives for sample 
libraries but not for recording. I've never used them via USB, although these 
days, USB 3 is plenty fast. Thus far, I've used 1 terabyte drives but now 
looking into eight or ten terabyte models for HDD. As always, SSDs are crazy 
expensive when getting into those capacities. If this is for recording, 7200 
rpm HDDs are plenty fast and you can pick them up for around seventy dollars.
