Almost there. I have a Mac book Pro and waiting for Black Friday sales for TB external drives. I’m learning how to use the Mac before loading PT.
If Samsung SSD’s are good for sample libraries, is there a preferred TB HDD for recording you might suggest. Agreed. Having said all that if like me you are using Pro Tools with a single drive for samples and recording then a good SSD such as the Samsung T3 1TB or Samsung EVO or pro are great options. _____ From: ptaccess@googlegroups.com [mailto:ptaccess@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of TheOreoMonster Sent: 22 November 2017 07:36 To: ptaccess@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: What external hard drives are being used? SSD’s load faster and sample libraries operate at their best wen they have quick access to read /load the data they need to be playing back in real time while you are playing the instrument. Recording is writing to the drive and your standard HDD is plenty fast these days to handle the writing of recorded files. Also HDD’s are a lot cheaper per Gigabyte than SSD’s are. I have heard recordings should be done on a HDD and sample sound libraries on an SSD. Sounds backwards to me. Hi Andre, It's perfectly normal to use the second Thunderbolt port for things like drives. Some folks use peripherals like Thunderbolt Docks to gain multiple format I/O for more flexibility. It's definitely recommended to use a separate drive for the system and recording/media. If you're using an SSD, it's not as critical to use yet another separate drive for samples but, if you have the resources, it's definitely not a bad idea. Hope that helps, Slau On Nov 21, 2017, at 10:16 PM, Andre Jarreau < <mailto:andre.jarr...@earthlink.net> andre.jarr...@earthlink.net> wrote: Interesting question. I have two TB ports on my Mac. One for Audio interface and I thought the other for external drives. Is this a waste of an TB port? Secondly. Is it true it is best to have PT and all other associated recording software on one drive with a dedicated recording drive. Mac software being on the internal drive. Third. Should the midi sound library be on it’s own drive. Be patient with the newbee. I got that one from Sweetwater. It is a great drive Nate you will enjoy it. I have had it as long as I have been on this Protools list so I guess that’s around four or five years never a problem. I had a Glyph CD burner at one point and the thing that amazed me was that it had a 5-year warranty. It crapped out after 4 years and Glyph replaced it, no questions asked and gave me another 5-year warranty on the second drive. Can't beat that customer service. Hi Nate, I've had great experiences with both Western Digital and seagate drives. In every case, they were either seventy-two hundred or ten thousand rpm drives for the HDD models. I've used the same brands for the SSD drives for sample libraries but not for recording. I've never used them via USB, although these days, USB 3 is plenty fast. Thus far, I've used 1 terabyte drives but now looking into eight or ten terabyte models for HDD. As always, SSDs are crazy expensive when getting into those capacities. If this is for recording, 7200 rpm HDDs are plenty fast and you can pick them up for around seventy dollars.
